Assistant Professor (Non-Tenure Line), Stroke Recovery and Neurorehabilitation Research

The Department of Neurology at Penn State College of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated non-tenure line position at the rank of Assistant Professor to join our growing clinical research program focused on stroke recovery and neurorehabilitation. This faculty position offers an exciting opportunity to lead innovative research aimed at improving motor recovery and upper extremity function in individuals living with chronic neurological impairments.

The successful candidate will contribute to a nationally recognized research program dedicated to advancing recovery through the design, implementation, and dissemination of clinical trials and translational research initiatives. The position includes opportunities for independent investigation, grant development, interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor will:

  • Design, develop, and lead clinical research studies and clinical trials focused on post-stroke motor recovery and upper extremity rehabilitation.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-Principal Investigator on investigator-initiated and externally funded research projects.
  • Develop and submit competitive extramural grant applications to federal agencies, foundations, and other funding organizations.
  • Lead and contribute to scholarly activities, including manuscript preparation and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Oversee study implementation, including protocol development, regulatory submissions, participant recruitment, and clinical trial operations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Engineering, and related disciplines to advance translational neuroscience research.
  • Mentor trainees, research staff, and junior investigators engaged in clinical and translational research.
  • Present research findings at regional, national, and international scientific meetings.
  • Contribute to the academic mission of Penn State College of Medicine through research, education, and service activities.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant scientific or clinical discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical research, neurorehabilitation, stroke recovery, & neuroscience.
  • Experience participating in the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical research studies.
  • Record of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience mentoring students, trainees, or research personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
