Job Summary
The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who uses the BSWH nursing model to coordinate patient care. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates patient responses. The RN promotes safe patient passage, helps patients transition through healthcare without preventable complications or delays, and delegates interventions based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, patient condition, and employee competencies.
EssentialFunctions
- Clinical Judgment:
Conduct accurate assessments, identify and prioritize patient and family needs, develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans, and modify plans to meet outcomes. - Clinical Inquiry:
Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, including nursing indicators; assist evidence‑based practice changes through research and learning; participate in quality improvement initiatives. - Caring Practices:
Create an attentive, helpful, safe, and therapeutic environment; develop therapeutic relationships while maintaining boundaries; manage physical pain to promote relief and healing. - Response to Diversity:
Recognize and appreciate patients’ and families’ unique differences; incorporate culture, beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, lifestyle, status, age, and values into care plans. - Advocacy and Moral Agency:
Preserve and protect patients' confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights; represent their concerns; create individualized plans that reflect values and goals; help resolve ethical and clinical concerns. - Facilitation of Learning:
Facilitate learning for patients, families, nursing staff, the health care team, and the community; integrate education throughout care to help them make informed health care recommendations; apply health promotion and disease prevention; assess and document learning needs and outcomes. - Partnership:
Work with colleagues and community to create and implement care plans; remain open and attentive to all team members’ contributions; delegate tasks appropriately and ensure timely follow‑up. - Systems Thinking:
Use strategies and resources for problem‑solving for patients, families, and staff; recognize limited resources and consider safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in planning and delivering patient care.
- Knowledge and expertise of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
- Familiarity with laws, rules, and regulations; understanding of standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; adherence to hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies, and procedures for nursing care in the assigned area.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention and management; knowledge of medications, common dosages, effects, and potential adverse reactions.
- Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Social skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to observe changes in patients’ medical conditions and communicate them to nursing staff and physicians/providers.
- Ability to provide age‑specific, quality, patient‑centered care through the nursing process and standards; respect the diversity of human experience; develop, evaluate, implement, and modify patient care plans as needed.
- General computer skills including Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.

- Education:
Graduate of an accredited program or at least 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification. - Major:
Nursing. - Experience:
2 years of experience.
- Registered Nurse (RN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
