Overview
Blue Origin is seeking a mechanical design engineer to contribute to the development of rocket hardware and safe human spaceflight across our Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units.
Responsibilities- Design production, development, test, integration and advanced manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units.
- Integrate mechanical design and analysis principles across various projects in a fast‑paced environment.
- Interpret and apply standard drafting practices (ASME Y14.5) in drawing creation.
- Address a wide range of technical design challenges related to assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers and custom machines.
- Collaborate with component designers, manufacturing engineers and integration engineering to achieve cradle‑to‑grave metrics including safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life and maintenance.
- Manage projects from vendor selection to fabrication, inspection, installation, proof testing and commissioning of custom tooling.
- Set, implement and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion.
- B.S. degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- 10+ years of experience in the design, build and commissioning of tooling, fixtures, custom machines or design support equipment for manufacturing, assembly and test.
- Experience with FEM and complex structural analysis, including hand calculations and free‑body diagrams.
- Proven experience with CAD‑based design software for modeling and drafting.
- Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), including taking products from development design to rate production.
- Understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T and tolerance/stack‑up analysis.
- Knowledge of common manufacturing processes and machines such as CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet‑metal bending, lifting/rigging, assembly and inspection.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME BTH-1, aluminum design manual and AISC.
- Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings, etc.
- Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems.
- Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems.
- Experience with analysis packages such as ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver and NX Advance Simulation.
