Position OverviewUnder the direction of a Police Sergeant, the School Resource Law Enforcement Officer will be tasked with the general safety and security of their assigned school. The Officer will be partnered with a full‑time School Resource Officer from a neighboring school to assist in the execution of their duties. The Officer holds the same level of authority as full‑time Law Enforcement Officers and is expected to act beyond the confines of the assigned school when required by command.
QualificationsTo be considered for hire, the candidate must have previous full‑time certified law enforcement experience. Should a candidate be selected from another state, Florida certification must be attained within the first year of employment; the Department will reimburse fees and costs associated with the required comparative compliance course and state certification.
Additional Requirements- Must have separated or retired from all prior law enforcement agencies in good standing.
- Must have successfully completed the modified or full agility course at the Broward College Institute of Public Safety within the preceding six months of application.
- Must have successfully completed the swim test at the Broward College Institute of Public Safety (does not expire).
- This position receives 16 wellbeing hours which are non‑accruing and not payable at separation.
- All equipment necessary for the execution of duties will be provided by the Department.
- A take‑home vehicle will be provided for a nominal monthly fee to offset fuel cost; the vehicle is only to be used during the school year, exclusively for traveling to and from work and for official business.
- There are no benefits assigned to this position (no health insurance, paid time off, holiday pay, etc.).
- The position is not typically eligible for overtime pay; overtime may be issued at the direction of the Chief of Police or designee during a state of emergency.
- Any mandatory court appearance will occur during normal working hours; no overtime or supplemental pay will be offered for such appearances.
- Seasonal School Resource Officers will receive up to 40 hours annually of paid training, typically over school holidays, teacher workdays, or summer break.
- Reviews will be issued quarterly for the first year of employment, then biannually thereafter.
- The position is at‑will and may be discontinued at any time.
Up to 1,488 hours plus 40 hours of training annually. The schedule will run concurrent with the school in which the Officer is assigned, including activities occurring outside the school’s standard hours.
