Job Summary
The Referral Coordinator supports the clinical unit with clerical activities. This individual will coordinate all external and some internal services and will be responsible for scheduling consultations, diagnostic testing, and surgical procedures. The coordinator will also coordinate all related services in a pleasant and professional manner for patients as directed.

- Order entry into the computer system.
- Coordinate and schedule referrals as per policy.
- Ensure all necessary medical records are forwarded to the referral provider.
- Act as a resource for staff and patients regarding referral policies and procedures.
- Provide internal and external referral coordination.
- Input all authorization information into the database, including diagnostic and procedure codes.
- Obtain appropriate authorizations as needed.
- Refer requests for emergency care, urgent care, or medical advice to the appropriate staff member.
- Serve as a resource for staff and patients regarding insurance benefits.
- Contact patients with information concerning tests ordered by a provider as necessary.
- Order and/or direct patients for outside tests.
- Help maintain daily flow by assisting the supervisor as directed.
- Work effectively as a member of a patient‑care team and contribute suggestions for improving unit and organizational operations.
- Complete other tasks as assigned.
- Obtain authorization from a variety of insurance companies depending on each patient’s plan.
High school diploma or GED. Previous experience in a physician’s office, clinic, or hospital processing referrals. Medical terminology knowledge. Experience scheduling healthcare appointments. Experience with office equipment, including computers, calculators, fax machines, and copiers.
Skills & Proficiencies- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Proficient in use of ECW
- Experience with various insurance portals
- Knowledge of Medicaid and Medicare
This position works under usual office conditions, requiring prolonged use of a personal computer and the phone. The employee must be able to stand, sit, walk, and occasionally climb. Physical demands include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Travel RequirementsSome driving or traveling to assigned clinics may be required.
Tools & EquipmentComputer and peripherals, standard and customized software applications, and usual office equipment.
