Broward County’s first city is undergoing an exciting renaissance, and we are seeking an experienced, strategic, and results-driven leader to serve as our Community Development Deputy Director.

Under the general direction of the Director of Community Development, the ideal candidate will oversee the Community Development Department, including the Planning, Building, and Code Compliance Divisions. This position provides leadership and strategic direction in the areas of permitting, zoning administration, development review, code enforcement, and beach parking operations.

  • Assists the Director of Community Development in planning, organizing, and directing the operations of the Planning, Building, and Code Compliance Divisions.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of the City's permitting, zoning, development review, and code enforcement programs to ensure efficient, customer-focused service delivery.
  • Supervises and evaluates division managers, supervisors, and staff, establishing performance expectations and fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.
  • Oversee the administration and enforcement of land development regulations, zoning codes, building codes, and related federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Directs and coordinates the City's permitting and development review processes, ensuring timely processing and effective interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Oversees Code Compliance operations and develop strategies to address property maintenance, nuisance violations, and quality-of-life issues throughout the community.
  • Manages the Beach Ranger program, including parking enforcement operations and customer service activities at Ocean Park Beach Complex.
  • Assists in the preparation and administration of departmental budgets, studies and operational plans.
  • Serves as a liaison with residents, businesses, developers, consultants, outside agencies, and elected officials regarding community development matters.
  • Prepares and presents reports, recommendations, ordinances, and agenda items to the City Manager, Deputy City Manager, advisory boards, and the City Commission.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and process improvements that enhance operational efficiency, transparency, and customer service.
  • Responds to complex inquiries, resolves sensitive issues, and represents the Department at public meetings, workshops, and community events.
  • Participates in the administration and enforcement of municipal floodplain management regulations, ensuring compliance with Federal Emergency Management Agency and Community Rating System requirements.
  • Performs the duties of the Director of Community Development in the Director's absence.
What's required:

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Engineering, Construction Management, Planning or related field
  • Minimum six (6) years of progressively responsible supervisory and management level experience, with broad exposure to planning and development services and experience
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with overall good driving record. If driver's license is out of state, must be able to obtain a Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.

  • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible supervisory and management level experience, with broad exposure to planning and development services and experience
  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
