Position Summary

The Highway Maintenance Electrical Technician I assists a Journeyman in installing, inspecting, and repairing electrical systems for roadway operations. Responsibilities include servicing highway lighting, signs, and basic traffic electrical systems while following safety procedures.

Daily tasks involve pulling wire, replacing fixtures, testing circuits, and troubleshooting faults. This role will also set up temporary traffic control, document work, and keep tools organized. This entry-level position requires outdoor work in all weather and may include night or weekend shifts. By focusing on safety and showing a willingness to learn, you will develop valuable electrical skills and help ensure safer roads.

This position reports to the Ocoee, FL office.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare work sites by gathering tools, materials, and parts; load, secure, and unload equipment safely.
  • Measure, cut, thread, and bend conduit; route and secure conduit and cable trays as directed.
  • Drill holes and pull or push wiring through openings; label conductors and maintain tidy terminations.
  • Assist with lifting, positioning, and fastening wiring, conduit, junction boxes, fixtures, and motors.
  • Perform basic electrical repairs and replacements, including fuses, light sockets, bulbs, switches, photocells, and breakers, under supervision.
  • Trace and help troubleshoot shorts and open circuits using meters and test equipment, report findings to the lead electrician.
  • Disassemble defective electrical equipment, replace worn or damaged parts, and reassemble, test for proper operation.
  • Support installation and maintenance of roadway lighting, sign lighting, and related low-voltage systems as directed.
  • Set up and maintain simple work zone traffic control and follow lockout/tagout procedures when required.
  • Work from elevated locations up to 60 feet using lifts or bucket trucks, including work near water, following fall protection and rescue procedures.
  • Keep tools and vehicles clean and organized; perform basic preventive maintenance and inventory checks.
  • Complete basic documentation on a smartphone or tablet, including work logs, material usage, photos, and inspection forms.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip checks on assigned vehicles; drive company vehicles safely and follow DOT and company policies.
  • Use all equipment, tools, materials, and PPE safely; participate in tailgate safety talks and report hazards or incidents promptly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the crew and project schedule.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge
  • Basic electrical theory and safe work practices, including voltage, current, resistance, series and parallel circuits, and proper use of test equipment.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code, roadway lighting standards, and manufacturer instructions for lighting, photocells, timers, and drivers.
  • Wiring methods for low-voltage and 120/240 VAC systems, including color codes, grounding and bonding, GFCI/AFCI concepts, and weatherproof enclosures.
  • Conduit types and fittings, bending fundamentals, and corrosion protection suitable for outdoor and roadside environments.
  • Lockout/tagout, arc flash awareness, fall protection, and work zone safety principles aligned with MUTCD.
  • Basic maintenance practices for bucket trucks, lifts, and hand and power tools used in electrical work.
Skills
  • Measure, cut, thread, and bend conduit accurately; pull wire, make clean terminations, and label conductors neatly.
  • Use multimeters, clamp meters, and continuity testers to assist with troubleshooting shorts, opens, and ground faults.
  • Install and replace lamps, ballasts, LED drivers, photocells, switches, and receptacles under supervision with attention to detail.
  • Read simple plans, one-line diagrams, and wiring schematics; follow written procedures and job hazard analyses.
  • Set up simple temporary traffic control and maintain a clean, organized work area and service vehicle.
  • Documents work clearly on paper or mobile devices, including parts used, test results, and before-and-after photos.
  • Communicate effectively with the lead electrician, crew members, inspectors, and the public; ask clarifying questions and follow directions.
Abilities
  • Work safely at heights up to 60 feet using lifts or bucket trucks and, when required, near water while using proper PPE and fall protection.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds, carry up to 25 pounds regularly, and perform frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and reaching on uneven terrain.
  • Operate company vehicles safely and conduct basic pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Work outdoors in heat, humidity, rain, wind, and low-light conditions, including nights and weekends when assigned.
