Position Summary
The System Protection & Control Technician calibrates, installs, maintains, and repairs protective relays and associated equipment to ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of the Duke Energy Electric Grid. The technician works in generation plants, transmission switch yards, control houses, and distribution substations, maintaining a high level of hazard awareness and safe work practices. Responsibilities include maintaining, installing, repairing, and troubleshooting complex control systems, protective relay systems (microprocessor and electro‑mechanical), substation and electric utility protection systems, station automation, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
The technician reads and interprets substation drawings, performs switching and tagging, and has call‑out duties to support power system emergencies.
- Calibrate, install, maintain, and repair protective relays and related equipment.
- Maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot control systems, relay systems, substation and utility protection systems, station automation, and SCADA.
- Read and interpret substation drawings, including single‑line drawings, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings.
- Perform switching and tagging to secure equipment clearance for repair, maintenance, or construction tasks.
- Respond to call‑outs for power system emergencies; be available day/night, weekends, holidays, and in all weather conditions.
- Travel and stay overnight at various locations as required.
- Pass a test demonstrating basic understanding of AC/DC theory, Ohm’s law, single‑phase and three‑phase power, watts, vars, VA, phase angles, power factor, and other power system parameters.
- Read and interpret electrical/electronic schematics and functional diagrams.
- Use state‑of‑the‑art test equipment, including multimeters, relay test instruments, oscilloscopes, and digital analyzers.
- Demonstrate basic computer knowledge and associated software usage.
- Pass the applicable EEI Technician test.
- Obtain Switching & Tagging certification within 180 days.
- Successfully complete the Assistant SPAC training program.
- Hold a minimum of a two‑year degree or equivalent in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or a related field, or an honorable military discharge with electronics experience, or a journeyman relay technician classification at Duke Energy or another utility.
- Lift up to 75 lbs.; push/pull weights up to 75 lbs.; operate small hand tools, turn knobs, and perform repetitive bending, stooping, and squatting.
- Work in enclosed or tight spaces, climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights, and sit for 2–3 hours during tasks.
- Travel as needed, including overnight stays, across multiple locations.
