- Performs minor maintenance and servicing work on any type of equipment, assists in repairs, checks and adds fluids, adjusts brakes, maintains tire air pressure, cleans and washes equipment.
- Obtains Instructional CDL permit or license and operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment (dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer, asphalt repair truck) while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
- Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities and oversees crews performing maintenance activities.
- Uses hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways; performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
- Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assists in assembly and erection of highway signs.
- Performs Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and assists with crew activity reports as needed.

Knowledge of:

- Operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
Abilities:
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment.
- Read and understand job related materials and fill out reports and forms.
- Maintain and repair highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.
- Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions, terrains, and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
- Work independently.
- Stand for an extended period of time.
- Possess a valid Class “E” Driver’s License and obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
- Register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse for pre‑employment query as required.
- Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (MOT) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
- Respond to emergencies and be readily available to operate CMV or perform other safety‑sensitive functions as required.
- Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates and obtain necessary training, certification and satisfactory criminal background check.
- Maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
- Applicants must be United States (U.S.) citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers. Visa sponsorship is not available.
- Requires one year experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
- Class “E” Driver’s License required at time of hire.
- CDL Class “B” License Instructional Permit required within 60 days of appointment and obtain CDL Class “B” license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
- Acceptable driving record as defined by policy.
- Three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation.
- Any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years.
- A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years.
- A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past four (4) years.
