Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reconciliations and journal entries, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, and assisting with financial reporting and compliance requirements. This position works closely with management and other departments to ensure the timely and accurate recording of financial transactions and adherence to company policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Accounting
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Analyze general ledger activity and investigate variances.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for accounting transactions.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with company policies.
Month-End and Year-End Close
  • Assist in coordinating month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Review accrued expenses and prepaid expenses.
  • Record recurring entries and adjusting journal entries.
  • Assist with financial statement preparation and analysis.
Cash Management
  • Monitor cash activity and assist with cash forecasting.
  • Reconcile bank statements and investigate outstanding items.
  • Assist with intercompany transactions and reconciliations.
  • Support daily cash reporting activities.
Fixed Assets
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Review capital expenditures for proper accounting treatment.
  • Assist with annual fixed asset reviews and physical asset verification.
  • Record asset additions, disposals, and transfers.
Compliance and Reporting
  • Assist with tax preparation and filings, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist with annual audits and financial reviews.
  • Support insurance, census, and government reporting requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with accounting policies and procedures.
Analysis and Process Improvement
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
  • Assist in developing and improving accounting processes.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of accounting software and reporting tools.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports and analyses for management.
Other Responsibilities
  • Support Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions as needed.
  • Work closely with other departments to gather financial data and support strategic initiatives.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Respond to internal and external audit requests.
  • Perform additional accounting duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Experience
  • 1–4 years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Public accounting or industry accounting experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP or similar ERP systems.
  • Experience with Black Line, Flo Qast, or account reconciliation software.
  • Experience in fuel, propane, transportation, wholesale distribution, retail, or convenience store industries.
  • Knowledge of sales tax, fuel tax, and fixed asset accounting.
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification is a plus.
