Roadway Utility Superintendent

A growing, well-established heavy civil contractor is seeking a night shift Superintendent to lead a major roadway and utility project in the Hickory, NC area. This role owns field planning and execution for earthwork, highway, utility, and mass excavation work from start to finish.

Schedule night shift, with weekend work expected. Local and out of town travel, including overnight stays when the job requires it.

Compensation $130,000 to $160,000 per year, based on skills and experience.

The Superintendent owns field planning and execution for all earthwork, highway, utility, and mass excavation work on the project, scheduling and directing crews, equipment, and subcontractors to hit budget and production targets. This role reads plans, sets grade, checks survey control, and keeps production moving each shift, while controlling labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs to deliver on time and on budget.

The Superintendent runs a safe, organized night operation with daily job costing, and leads by example, working alongside the crew on tasks like setting pipe or operating equipment when needed.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience managing field crews on civil or highway construction operations
  • Strong working knowledge of earthwork, grading, roadway, and underground utility work
  • Ability to read CPM schedules, plans, and specifications and translate them into daily production
  • OSHA 30 certification, or willingness to obtain it within 30 days of hire
  • Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience running night shift field operations
  • Willingness to travel and stay overnight when project needs require it
