REPORTS TO: Principal
PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Management of Instructional Time
Teacher ensures materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson are ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; quickly starts the class; gets students on task promptly and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Management of Student Behavior
Teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, and movement in the classroom. Frequently monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, and seat‑work activities as well as transitions. Stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Instructional Presentation
The teacher begins the lesson by reviewing previous material, introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives, and speaks fluently and precisely. Uses concepts and language understandable to students, provides relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriately leveled questions, and maintains a brisk pace while avoiding unnecessary slowdowns. Smoothly transitions between lessons and instructional activities and summarizes main points at the end.
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
The teacher sets clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check all students’ performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; poses questions clearly and one at a time.

Instructional Feedback
The teacher provides correct or incorrect feedback to encourage student growth, offers prompt feedback on assigned out‑of‑class work, confirms correct oral responses, and provides sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses by probing, repeating the question, giving a clue, or allowing for more time.
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Facilitating Instruction
Develops an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide curricular goals; uses diagnostic data from tests and other assessments to revise objectives and tasks; maintains accurate records to document performance; aligns objectives, learning strategies, assessment, and student needs at appropriate difficulty levels; uses available resources to support instruction.

Interacting Within the Educational Environment
Teacher treats all students fairly and equitably and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
Carrying out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adhering to laws, policies, rules, and regulations, and following a professional development plan to demonstrate growth.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must use classroom equipment such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and tools for children with special needs. Must exert negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to time spent standing/walking, requirements align with Light Work.
Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics of data or people.
Interpersonal Communication: Ability to convey information orally or via signals and to receive instructions from superiors.
