Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time
    :
    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson or instructional activity; starts the class quickly, gets students on task at the beginning of each lesson, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior
    :
    The teacher establishes rules and procedures for classroom administration, verbal participation, talking during activities, student movement, and transitions; monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, seat work, and transition activities; responds to inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation
    :
    The teacher reviews prior material, introduces lesson objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in comprehensible language, provides relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with high success rates, asks appropriate level questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace with necessary slow‑downs, facilitates smooth transitions, ensures assignments are clear, and summarizes main points at lesson end.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    :
    The teacher sets clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to assess performance; uses oral, written, and work products to check progress; and poses questions clearly, one at a time.
  • Instructional Feedback
    :
    The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to promote growth, gives prompt feedback on assigned out‑of‑class work, affirms correct oral responses, and offers sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses by probing, repeating the question, giving clues, or allowing more time.
  • Facilitating Instruction
    :
    The teacher develops an instructional plan aligned with school and systemwide curricular goals; uses diagnostic information from tests and assessment procedures to revise objectives or tasks; maintains accurate records of student performance; matches learning strategies, assessment, and student needs to appropriate difficulty; and utilizes available human and material resources to support instruction.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    :
    The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably, and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
    :
    The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned or needed; adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations; follows a professional development plan and demonstrates growth.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
