HICKORY CITY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: EC TEACHER ASSISTANT AND EC BUS MONITOR

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Teacher Assistant

Under limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal, provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. Performs tasks to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. Reports to the teacher and/or principal.

Bus Driver

Under limited supervision, the monitor will provide support to the bus driver for the safe transportation of students. Performs tasks to support the bus driver and students while loading, riding, and unloading the bus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teacher Assistant

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Academic Assistance

  • Gives group instruction as prescribed by teacher.
  • Provides individualized instruction.
  • Demonstrates various instructional activities.
  • Monitors work assigned by teacher.
  • Checks and corrects students' work while in progress.
  • Keeps students on task.
  • Praises and reinforces achievement of students.
  • Reports student progress to teacher.

Instructional Preparation/Support

  • Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment.
  • Prepares visual aids.
  • Duplicates materials.
  • Reorganizes materials at the end of day.
  • Serves as proctor during testing.
  • Attends workshops.
  • Scores students' papers as instructed by teacher.
  • Distributes and collects instructional materials.

Reports and Records

  • Checks and reports attendance.
  • Enters data in health record.
  • Records student behavior.
  • Files data according to regulatory requirements.

Monitoring Student Behavior

  • Supervises students in the classroom and other locations.
  • Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior.
  • Promotes student self esteem.
  • Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others.
  • Reconciles minor student conflicts.
  • Participates in development of discipline policy.
  • Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods.
  • Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal.
  • Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior.

Bus Monitor

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist students during loading and unloading to ensure safety and prevent injuries.
  • Secure students in car seats, harnesses, seat belts, or other safety restraints, per individualized plans.
  • Monitor students' behavior and well-being throughout the bus ride.
  • Provide support to prevent bullying, elopement, or unsafe behaviors.
  • Remain seated near or with students who require close supervision.
  • Maintain clear communication with the bus driver about student needs or incidents.
  • Follow individual student care and safety plans as outlined by the bus driver.
  • Report any behavioral concerns, injuries, or unusual events to the bus driver or appropriate school staff.
  • Know and follow emergency evacuation procedures, especially for students with mobility or communication challenges.
  • Administer minor first aid when necessary and alert emergency personnel if required.
  • Participate in training related to job duties and responsibilities.
  • Protect student privacy and confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Model patience, empathy, and respect for all students and staff.
  • Help students with physical challenges board and exit the bus (e.g., wheelchairs, walkers).
  • Support students with communication, sensory, or medical needs during transit.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Teacher Assistant

Performs other related duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s degree in education or equivalent, preferred in a related field, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.

STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to lift and move objects related to the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for light work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to students.
