The Frye Regional Medical Center’s Critical Care Unit consists of three intensive care units, each with 8 beds for a total of 24 beds. Specialized nursing staff provide care for critically ill patients and their families using a holistic, integrated team approach. In the CVICU, cardiovascular‑trained nurses care for patients who have undergone procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafts and valve replacements.
Summaryof Major Responsibilities
- Assess the patient’s physical and mental health, including the patient’s reaction to illnesses and treatment regimens.
- Record and report the results of the nursing assessment.
- Plan, initiate, deliver, and evaluate appropriate nursing acts.
- Teach, assign, delegate or supervise other personnel in implementing the treatment regimen.
- Collaborate with other health care providers in determining the appropriate health care for a patient, but not prescribe a medical treatment regimen or make a medical diagnosis, except under the supervision of a licensed physician.
- Implement the treatment and pharmaceutical regimen prescribed by any person authorized by state law to prescribe the regimen.
- Provide teaching and counseling about the patient’s health.
- Report and record the plan for care, nursing care given, and the patient’s response to that care.
- Supervise, teach, and evaluate those who perform or are preparing to perform nursing functions and administer nursing programs and services.

Requirements, Certifications & Licensures
- Current North Carolina license
- BLS, ACLS required or within one year of employment
Minimum Experience
- ICU – previous critical care experience preferred
- Minimum 1 year of inpatient RN experience required
