Overview

The Director of Surgical Services manages the daily operations of the surgical department, reports to the Senior Director of Operations, and ensures alignment with departmental and organizational objectives.

The role includes staff relations, scheduling, procurement management, patient care coordination, professional growth, evidence‑based practice integration, audit coordination, and adherence to core measures, safety goals, and NQF safe practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage staff relations including performance management, staff satisfaction, and conflict management.
  • Perform and oversee scheduling, staff development, and student engagements.
  • Determine and justify needs for systems/equipment/supplies purchases, monitor usage, and ensure proper functioning of equipment and supplies.
  • Assess the quality of patient care delivered and coordinate care with patients, staff, physicians, and other departments.
  • Provide patient care when necessary.
  • Create and foster an environment that encourages professional growth.
  • Integrate evidence‑based practices into operations and clinical protocols.
  • Coordinate and direct internal/external audits and report to appropriate committees.
  • Ensure the department remains focused on its role in the continuum of care.
  • Adhere to all core measures, patient safety goals, and NQF safe practices.
How You Will Contribute
  • Accurately perform patient assessments and identify patient needs.
  • Identify and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Provide care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient.
  • Perform timely and appropriate documentation relating to medical necessity in the medical record.
  • Responsible for completion and revision of the interdisciplinary care plan for each patient.
  • Perform timely and accurate QI assessments.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (required).
  • Master’s Degree (preferred).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
  • Current RN license to practice in NC.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in Surgery.
  • Leadership/Director experience preferred.
  • Proven leadership ability and hospital operational ability.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to serve as a role model and advocate for the discipline of nursing.
