Community Response Police Apprentice

Overview

Current high school seniors only. Must be accepted to participate in the Apprenticeship NC program through the North Carolina Community Colleges System, specifically through the Catawba Apprenticeship Network at Catawba Valley Community College. Must be at least 18 years old and currently working on completing a high school diploma. Must not have a felony conviction and must undergo a thorough background investigation.

Must be able to work part-time duty hours that may vary as scheduled. Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

• Work directly for the Hickory Police Department, assigned to the Support Services Division as an unarmed uniformed security aide to assist in securing assigned areas throughout the City of Hickory.
• Areas may include City parks and trail systems, the Downtown Social District, Hickory City Walk and Book Walk, Hickory River Walk, and assistance to staff at the Arts and Science Center.
• Conduct security checks on foot, by bicycle, or by motor vehicle to ensure safety and security of citizens, personnel, and property.
• Make reports to the proper authority when situations arise and maintain radio communications with the Hickory Police Department Communications Center; file necessary reports as required.
• Produce electronic reports as needed and utilize basic computer skills.
• Interact with the general public to provide directions and answer inquiries; communicate internally with other employees by face-to-face, telephone, or portable radio to receive instructions and information regarding daily duties.

• Must not have been convicted of a felony and must undergo a thorough background investigation.

• PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is primarily performed while standing and walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
• SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety-sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third party vendor.
• WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside and outside where the employee may be exposed to cold or inclement weather.
