Eligibility
Must be accepted to participate in the Apprenticeship NC program through the North Carolina Community Colleges System, specifically the Catawba Apprenticeship Network at Catawba Valley Community College.
Only current high school seniors may apply.
Must be at least 18 years old and currently working toward a high school diploma.
Must have no felony convictions and will undergo a thorough background investigation.
Must be able to work part-time duty hours that may vary as scheduled.
Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.
ResponsibilitiesA person in this position will work directly for the Hickory Police Department, assigned to the Support Services Division as an unarmed uniformed security aide, assisting in securing assigned areas throughout the City of Hickory, including parks, trails, the downtown social district, city walks, river walk, and the Arts and Science Center.
They will conduct security checks on foot, by bicycle, or in a motor vehicle to ensure the safety and security of citizens, personnel, and property.
They will make reports to the proper authority if a situation arises, maintain radio communications with the Hickory Police Department Communications Center, and file all necessary reports.
They will produce electronic reports via computer and require basic computer skills.
They will communicate with the general public face‑to‑face to give directions and answer inquiries, and communicate internally with other employees by telephone or portable radio.
Physical DemandsWork is primarily performed while standing and walking, occasionally lifting light objects.
Safety SensitiveThis position is safety‑sensitive and will be part of a random drug testing pool, with methodology handled by an outside third‑party vendor.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed inside and outside, with exposure to cold or inclement weather.
