Job Overview
Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer utility lines and taps. Other duties as assigned. Applicants must possess the ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods outdoors in varying climatic conditions. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, minimum age of 18, and a valid NC Class "C" driver's license.

Driving Record RequirementApplicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.
Responsibilities- Conduct traffic control at job sites and operate crew vehicle.
- Install water and sewer taps, services, and mains.
- Assist with loading the dump truck.
- Locate underground utilities.
- Assist in the repair of water main breaks.
- Assist in the installation and repair of water meters, hydrants, valve boxes, water valves, mains, and manholes.
- Perform jetting functions to clean lines.
- Perform building maintenance duties.
- Patch utility road cuts.
- Operate a dewatering pump, tamp, and various hand tools.
- Operate a manual transmission vehicle.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

ComplexityThe work consists of related duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of a water distribution system. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
Scope and EffectThe purpose of this position is to perform general maintenance duties in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the system.

Physical DemandsThe physical demands include frequent standing, walking, using hands to handle tools and equipment, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crouching, and moving more than 100 pounds. A functional prework screen must be passed.
Safety SensitiveThis position is safety sensitive and will be part of a random drug testing pool, handled by an outside third‑party vendor.
Work EnvironmentWork is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals is possible. Protective devices may be required.
