What Your Day Will Look Like:
As a senior construction inspector, you’ll monitor the contractor’s on‑site construction activities and inspect materials to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and other contract documents for excavations, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures. You’ll take field measurements of pay items, report the contractor’s daily production rates, and schedule work and inspection phases with the contractor’s superintendent and agency personnel. You will provide support in documentation development for the final estimate package, mentor and assist in the management and training of other construction inspection staff, and report to the project administrator.
Project needs may occasionally require nighttime work.
- Inspect, observe, document, and verify work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents, and plans.
- Utilize engineering inspection practices to perform complex mathematical calculations and measurements of completed work to date.
- Maintain inspector's daily report of assigned work activities, contractor labor and equipment, quantity of material received and verified.
- Perform on-site material testing and produce as‑constructed sketches.
- Direct coordination between field efforts and administrative staff to increase, decrease, or modify reporting and monitoring according to project work activities.
- Organize and lead field staff meetings to provide updates on project efforts and procedures.
- Delegate inspector staff responsibilities and allocate resources to support current and projected project conditions and activities.
- Assist in the training efforts of more junior staff.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent plus at least four (4) years of experience in construction inspection, two (2) of which shall have been in bridge and/or roadway construction inspection; or a Civil/Construction Engineering degree and one (1) year of road & bridge CEI experience, with the ability to earn any additional required certifications within one year.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Experience working outdoors in inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water; ability to function during occasional extreme weather on the jobsite.
- Physical demands may include frequent talking, hearing, standing, moving, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, grasping, feeling, balancing, coordination, and occasional sitting or operating a company vehicle. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs. may be required.
