About the Department

The North Carolina Department of Administration is the business manager for state government, overseeing building construction, purchasing, contracting, facilities maintenance, state vehicles, real property, and auxiliary services such as courier and surplus property sales.

Position Overview

Registered Architect in the State Construction Division, responsible for the design review of construction documents submitted by licensed architects and engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve in the Design Review Section as an architect for the architectural discipline.
  • Provide written technical review and commentary on construction documents submitted by licensed architects and engineers.
  • Prepare final submittal showing compliance with review comments and readiness to bid.
  • Address architectural design and details, comply with General Statutes, NC State Building Codes, industry standards, SCOT State Construction Manual, policies and guidelines.
  • Review site layout, roads, parking, drainage, building spaces, circulation, building systems, finishes and materials.

Compensation and Benefits

Recruitment Range: $67,122 - $99,782. Sign‑on bonus of $5,000 for the successful applicant (subject to eligibility and budget). Maximum salary $99,782.

Benefits include 12 annual paid holidays, health, dental, vision insurance, and NC State retirement plan.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license. Out‑of‑state applicants must obtain a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid license to practice architecture from the North Carolina Board of Architecture & Registered Interior Designers.
  • Level III North Carolina Inspector Certificate issued by the NC Code Officials Qualification Board, or ability to obtain within 3 years of employment.
  • Minimum of 5 years documented experience in design of varied building types (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Working knowledge of International Building Code or NC State Building Codes, industry standards, general construction policies, and North Carolina General Statutes on public construction.
  • Experience collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, negotiations, public speaking, and oral presentations.
  • Ability to discern discrepancies in technical documents, provide objective professional opinions, and maintain working relationships with officials and representatives.
