Overview
The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) is a residential school serving visually impaired students ages five to 22. The Residential Life Coordinator (S) is responsible for providing instructional and support services to help students achieve job awareness, preparation, and placement, while managing day‑to‑day operations of the residential program.
Responsibilities- Provide instruction in job awareness, preparation, and procurement; coach students and support work placement in on‑campus and off‑campus settings.
- Arrange transportation to and from off‑campus interviews and jobs.
- Develop relationships with local employers to create job opportunities.
- Align the residential learning environment with the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).
- Exercise decision‑making in daily operations, including staff and student placement, program development, crisis management, and staff development.
- Develop, coordinate, implement, and monitor programs such as Residential, Recreation, Independent Living Center, Behavioral/Social, and Independent Living Apartment (ILA).
Implement policies, procedures, and documentation (safety check sheets, census, cottage placement lists, shift reports, ILA manuals, attendance sheets, progress notes, off‑campus forms, calendars, etc.). - Work with Behavioral Technicians on student discipline and behavior; handle crises, accidents, abuse allegations, and safety issues.
- Audit and requisition program supplies, equipment, and maintenance requests.
- Prepare and submit maintenance and business office forms (work orders, purchasing, telephone).
- Communicate with parents/guardians about student activities and related matters.
- Facilitate program staff meetings, supervise and monitor staff, and manage staff development and training.
- Maintain student spending money records, write receipts, and handle cash transactions.
- Oversee building safety, conduct fire drills, and complete related reports.
- Assist Transportation Services; act as monitor and driver when needed.
- Recruit, evaluate, and hire staff; manage performance, discipline, and time records.
- Document student status management at shift changes; maintain required records (progress notes, assessments, BEACON timesheets, leave forms, incident reports, telephone logs).
- Ensure a safe environment, monitor equipment, report repairs, and maintain cleanliness of cottages and houses.
- Adhere to safety regulations, fire, tornado, and other emergency drills.
- Follow attendance, leave, and professional conduct procedures; maintain appearance and grooming appropriate for the setting.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor, including staff assignments, attendance monitoring, staff meetings, and student behavioral management.
- Valid NC Teacher’s License (or eligible) with certification in Special Education or Cross‑Categorical Teacher of the Visually Impaired, or willingness to obtain it.
- High qualification in content area of instruction.
- Experience working with students having blindness and/or visual impairments in an educational setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional practices, assessment, goal setting, and evaluation.
- Proficiency in classroom and behavioral management strategies.
- Strong communication skills—written and verbal—for interacting with students, staff, families, and the public.
- Team‑work skills, flexibility, and ability to adapt to program needs.
- Proficient in current technology and web‑based functions for instruction and reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in child development, special education, education, or a closely related field with one year of experience, OR Bachelor’s with two years of experience, OR Associate’s with three years of experience (one supervisory), ORHigh‑school/GED with five years of experience (two supervisory).
Hourly range: $37,377.00 – $65,408.00. Work hours are 4pm – 12am.
