Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Biology at UNC‑Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high‑quality faculty who integrate cutting‑edge research and student‑focused teaching. The department is one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, enrolling over 5,000 undergraduate students each year and supporting a strong research base across many areas of biology.

Position

Summary

The Teaching Associate Professor is responsible for teaching up to three biology courses per semester (80 %), which may include fundamental classes for biology majors such as cell biology and genetics, biodiversity (ecology, evolution, and organismal biology), general biology for non‑majors, and advanced biology classes in the candidate’s areas of expertise. The position also involves departmental service (20 %) and opportunities for summer teaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and student advising.

The role is for an initial fixed‑term period of one to three years with potential for renewal.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

PhD in Biology or related field. All candidates must have a record of college teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience

The strongest candidates will have relevant experience teaching classes in‑person, including remote and online instruction. Applicants with a record of independent college teaching, ideally with in‑person experience, and a commitment to evidence‑based teaching methods are preferred, as are candidates with strong interdisciplinary content knowledge.
