Job Summary
Hourly Rate: $16.45. The Recreation Attendant—Naturalist assists with designing and teaching environmental education programming at the Piedmont Environmental Center (PEC), primarily for pre‑school through high school students, with occasional college/university participation. The role includes public programming, special events, and maintenance of teaching exhibits under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor while also leading programs independently and working a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
EssentialTasks & Responsibilities
- Assist in designing outdoor environmental education classes for students of various age groups.
- Help teach environmental education classes and programs in diverse weather conditions.
- Assist in designing and delivering public programs, classes, workshops, and special events in an outdoor setting.
- Deliver environmental education programming independently, as needed.
- Perform general maintenance on two outdoor teaching exhibits and a small living reptile exhibit.
- Assist in maintaining and organizing teaching materials and equipment.
- Assist with general maintenance of 11 miles of hiking trails onsite.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City safety standards and policies.
- Experience in designing and teaching environmental education programs.
- Ability to work independently and lead groups.
- Comfortable working outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
- Knowledge of topics such as ecology, natural history, weather, soils, geology, energy concepts, and local plant and animal biology.
- Strong organizational and maintenance skills for educational exhibits.
- Commitment to OSHA and City safety standards.
