Teacher – Elementary (K‑5) – Wayne County Public Schools Position Details

  • Title: Teacher
  • Reports to: Principal
  • Job Goal: To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress, activities and outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and administer school elementary curriculum consistent with district goals and objectives.
  • Promote a safe classroom environment conducive to individualized and small group instruction and learning.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate plans into effective learning experiences.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instruction to meet individual or small group needs, including students with special needs.
  • Instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, administrative regulations and school system procedures.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge and stay current through seminars, workshops, professional meetings or research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading and reporting for all student activities, achievements and attendance, as required by district procedures and laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school and district policies and establish standards of behavior for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other elementary staff, assess curriculum, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids and supplies, and maintain inventory records.
  • Supervise students during out‑of‑class activities, including transportation.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks assigned by the Principal and central office administrators as directed by the Superintendent. (The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities and is not all‑inclusive.)

Equipment

Standard office equipment such as computer, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, and differentiation for varied learning styles.
  • Knowledge of elementary curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data systems, data analysis and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Physical and Mental Demands

Works routinely in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
  • State certification as an Elementary Teacher.
  • Preferred state certification for the appropriate grade level.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or a related discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in a related area preferred.
Experience

Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels is a plus.
