MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively through speech and writing. Ability to identify, communicate, and analyze problems. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. Ability to plan and prioritize tasks. Ability to show initiative and self-direction. Ability to take ownership and utilize constructive feedback. Be organized and have a positive attitude. Function in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction High School Curriculum.

Must be punctual, professional, and ethically conduct oneself. Proficiently operate a computer and related software. Proven ability to concurrently address issues of various levels of complexity. Proven knowledge and skill in the use of advanced features of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs and Presentation Software. Skill in organizing, planning, and coordinating meetings and travel arrangements. Proficient in technology skills and the ability to teach others.

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill, and abilities.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Skills

Required: Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Education or a related field. Good written and oral communication, and time management skills.

Experience

Required: Some teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Skills

Preferred: Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Education, specifically in Special Education.

Experience

Preferred: Some experience teaching at a community college

Position Description SUMMARY

The GEARS Instructor (Giving Everyone a Role in Society) provides instruction, coaching, and support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enhance their independence, employability, and community participation. The instructor delivers curriculum in workplace readiness, career exploration, social and communication skills, functional academics, technology, self-determination, and independent living skills. Responsibilities include instructional planning, student progress monitoring, documentation and recordkeeping, employer and community engagement, and collaboration with college staff and external support agencies.

The position is committed to helping students achieve their educational, personal, and employment goals through inclusive and individualized learning experiences.

The GEARS Instructor reports directly to the Director of College and Career Readiness.

  • Recruit, enroll, orient, and support students participating in the GEARS program and complete all required registration and intake documentation.
  • Assess student strengths, interests, abilities, support needs, and career goals to develop individualized learning and success plans.
