Engineering Technician II (S)
Position Number: | Grade: NC09
Responsibilities- Assist the Bridge Program Manager in data collection and project coordination.
- Assist the Division Design Construct Engineer in delivering Division‑Managed projects from conception to completion, including project feasibility, planning, public involvement, design, right‑of‑way acquisition, environmental issues, budget, and project letting.
- Prepare preliminary highway design and final construction plans using Micro Station, GEOPak, and Open Roads Designer.
- Develop estimates of quantities, special provisions, and contract documents for Division Let projects.
- Assist higher‑level engineers with computer systems, applications, and configuration tasks.
- Review plans, proposals, and estimates for Division‑Managed projects to ensure compliance with NCDOT policies, federal requirements, and technical data; instruct and direct corrections of errors.
- Operate a state vehicle; a valid NC driver’s license is preferred.
- Use Micro Station/Open Roads Designer software to support project delivery.
- Proficiency in SAP/EBS Financial Management, STaRS project management system, ARCGIS, GO!
NC, and Microsoft applications. - Clear and timely written and verbal communication skills with internal and external customers such as local agencies, private consulting firms, and the public.
- Ability to recognize potential problem areas early in the planning or design process and resolve them in a context‑sensitive manner.
- General knowledge of the NCDOT organizational structure and operations to facilitate necessary contacts across branches.
- Knowledge of contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Skill in the use of computer equipment, software, and mathematical functions.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans.
- Experience maintaining and completing standard records, reports, and correspondence.
- Customer‑service experience involving explanation of engineering concepts to diverse groups.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related accredited curriculum.
- Two (2) years of progressive technician‑level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
