Position Summary
The County Maintenance Engineer for Camden, Currituck and Pasquotank counties in Division One, responsible for all maintenance and force‑account construction activities in those counties in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities- Supervise and monitor maintenance programs to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials.
- Accomplish force‑account and construction projects.
- Formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within budget limits.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees.
- Communicate effectively and maintain working relationships with the public, local governments, and fellow employees.
- Manage staff seven days per week, 24 hours a day as needed.
- Considerable knowledge of Civil Engineering principles and highway maintenance practices.
- Considerable knowledge of all field and office engineering instruments.
- Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts.
- Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with the department and the public.
- Professional engineering skills to solve highway problems.
- Capability to conduct field investigations on uneven terrain, steep slopes, and in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, and extreme heat and cold.
- Legal ability to operate a state vehicle.
- Safety toe shoes are required.
Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications- May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling/directing multiple work crews.
- Experience in using professional engineering skills to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems.
- Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects.
- Customer service experience related to explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
- Experience conducting meetings with employees, citizens, and public officials to perform investigations and resolve issues.
