Summary

The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy’s six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for executing a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization. The Harris Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Civil Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the Harris/Robinson nuclear sites, collaborating with other CDE staff to ensure high-quality design solutions meet site needs and milestone requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, including pipe hanger design, structural analysis, pipe stress analysis, soil and steel/concrete structure evaluations/field support, seismic equipment qualification, and weld design.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, determine and present recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Provide ongoing support for assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
  • Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirement documents to support engineering design changes.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Nuclear Engineer III: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. Master’s degree in engineering considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science. 4-6 years of engineering experience.
  • Sr Nuclear Engineer: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. Master’s degree in engineering considered in lieu of B.S. Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Working level knowledge of pipe stress, structural analysis software (GTSTRUDL or equivalent), pipe hanger design, seismic equipment qualification, weld design, proficiency with AISC, ACI, and AWS codes.
  • Soils and concrete experience (design evaluations/field issues).
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.
Special Requirements
  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • Position may require Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities, including callouts with defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
