It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, NC a medium custody male facility. This position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Position reports to the Programs Director I.
Key Duties Included:- Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written.
- Defending oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
- Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
- Demonstrating and instructing offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
- Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
- Training, observing, evaluating, and supervising effectively subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.
- Accounting for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs.
- Monitoring off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather and road conditions.

Salary Range $39,244 - $68,679 Salary Grade: NC08
