The Bioinformatics Scientist will provide bioinformatics and data science support to advance the Institute’s operational and research objectives, requiring expertise in statistical genomics, machine learning, and scalable analysis and integration of high-dimensional omics data, applying AI-driven methods to generate biologically meaningful insights.
Duties and Responsibilities- Generate and optimize programs and scripts for analysis and integration of large, high-dimensional omics datasets.
- Provide bioinformatics expertise and coordinate with biologist teams to conduct experimental queries and perform key components of studies.
- Build and maintain bioinformatics infrastructure, ensuring efficient data organization, parsing, and analysis.
- Deliver broad-based programming and analytic support across diverse bioinformatics and research projects.
- Install, troubleshoot, and run open-source and commercial scientific software on Linux and other platforms.
- Perform sequencing data processing, alignment, and downstream analysis for technologies such as RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, miRNA-Seq, and single-cell assays.
- Interpret raw and public-access datasets to generate biologically meaningful insights and produce reports, tables, graphs, and slide decks.
- Design and execute computational experiments, including development of novel statistical and machine-learning methods for multi-omics integration.
- Develop, optimize, and maintain reproducible analytical pipelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring transparent, reproducible workflows.
- Provide consulting on appropriate computational tools and analytical strategies to investigators testing scientific hypotheses.
- Document analyses, maintain a laboratory notebook, and report results at meetings and conferences.
- Mentor and train staff, students, and new investigators in computational analysis, software usage, and best-practice protocols.
- Offer hands-on workshops, ad-hoc training sessions, and product updates for bioinformatics tools and pipelines.
- Collaborate on research design, best practices for bioinformatics analysis, and prototype new computational methods.
- Analyze data quality, perform cleaning, harmonization, and integrate legacy datasets for new clinical trials.
- Visualize data and prepare publication-quality figures, tables, and graphs summarizing experimental findings.
- Develop custom software, scripts, and algorithms to support discovery in large, complex biological datasets.
- Evaluate, implement, and support commercial and open-source bioinformatics tools, leading pipeline design and development efforts.
- Contribute to manuscript preparation, drafting data analysis sections, and facilitating data submission to external repositories.
- Stay current on emerging technologies, statistical methods, computer science, and bioinformatics advances and share insights with the team.
- Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Data Science, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in bioinformatics or related field.
- Demonstrated training or experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or advanced statistical modeling applied to high-dimensional biological data.
- Experience with R, Python, MATLAB, Linux, Unix, Java, Shell, Perl, Bash, SAS, HPC, Git, Docker, Singularity, Apptainer, and workflow management tools.
- Skilled in next-generation sequencing data analysis, including bulk RNA-Seq, RNA-Seq, GWAS, and single-cell RNA-Seq.
- Skilled working with large data sets, microarray data analysis, pipeline development, multi-omics analysis, and machine learning.
- Experienced with core facilities, cloud platforms, reproducible research practices, data visualization, representation learning for omics data.
