Position Summary
The Research Associate – Senior Biocurator will support ongoing curation efforts for the Clinical Genome Resource (Clin Gen) research program directed by Dr. Jonathan Berg. Responsibilities include assisting Clin Gen working groups and expert panels with data collection and analysis from literature curation, fostering assessment of gene, variant, and clinical diagnosis relationships, and participating in local meetings and international conference calls with domain experts.
MajorResponsibilities
- Translate and integrate genetic information from primary literature and online genetic databases (e.g., OMIM, Clin Var, LOVD) into biocuration databases to support genomic medicine research.
- Implement and apply the curation framework and protocols developed by Clin Gen.
- Track progress of curation projects and provide feedback on curation toolsets.
- Participate in local and international meetings, conference calls, and collaborative exchanges with the UNC‑based curation task force and external partners.
- Contribute to preparation of publications, reports, and presentations within the department and at professional conferences.
- Relevant post‑baccalaureate degree required (or foreign equivalent). For candidates with comparable independent research productivity, a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) and at least three years of relevant experience may be accepted.
- May require terminal degree and professional licensure, depending on situational needs.
- Master’s degree in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
- Proficiency in genetics and genomic medicine concepts.
- Experience with online genetic databases, basic Excel, and database usage.
- Strong verbal and written communication, analytical and problem‑solving skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ph.D. in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
- Experience leading or contributing to preparation of scientific publications and reports.
- Previous experience managing small research development groups or supervising junior team members.
- Capability to comprehend and apply complex curation processes, critically evaluate research literature, and assess strength of evidence for genetic relationships.
- Knowledge of biological principles, central dogma of genetics, physiology, and disease states.
