Position: Public Safety Officer Part Time, Multiple Vacancies (College Wide)

Job Summary

The purpose of the job is to serve as a first responder who provides emergency and non‑emergency public safety services to the Broward College community. The Public Safety Officer fosters a safe and secure environment and acts as a deterrent to crime and unsafe behaviors through proactive patrol techniques, crime prevention, and law enforcement. The officer enforces local, state, and federal laws, college policies and procedures, investigates and documents crimes and disturbances, and performs related duties as directed.

The role requires completion of the Public Safety Academy usually within the first six months of hire.

Eligible Veterans

This position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Veterans’ Preference applicants must provide required documentation when submitting their application.

Essential Functions
  • Daily – 25%:
    Employ proactive patrol techniques by vehicle, bicycle, or on‑foot to foster safety and security for all BC‑affiliated persons and property. Engage in community‑oriented problem solving, policing, and crime prevention measures.
  • Daily – 20%:
    Respond to assigned calls for service, emergency and non‑emergency situations, and critical incidents. Initiate calls, assess situations, and determine appropriate response, including administering first aid and life support. Follow Incident Command System principles when addressing critical incidents.
  • Daily – 15%:
    Conduct investigations, interview witnesses, collect property and evidence, secure crime scenes, document findings, and prepare detailed case reports and logs.
  • Daily – 10%:
    Operate miscellaneous equipment including computers, communications equipment, AEDs, surveillance systems, vehicles, and vehicle jump starters.
  • As Needed – 5%:
    Perform community service functions such as safety escorts, hazard inspections, crime prevention outreach, and event security.
  • As Needed – 5%:
    Participate in ongoing training, assist in training new employees, and assist in parking enforcement, traffic direction, special events security, and surveillance activities.
  • As Needed – 5%:
    Process evidence, prepare court cases, and provide legal testimony.
  • Daily – 10%:
    Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Minimum High School diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree or college credits in public safety preferred.
  • Experience/Training:
    Minimum of one year of related public safety experience. Prior campus public safety or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses:
    Must obtain CPR with AED certification within six months of hire. Florida Class D Security Officer License or active law enforcement certification required. Valid Florida Driver’s License required and must be maintained throughout employment. First aid certification preferred.
  • Other:
    Ability to use fire extinguishers, golf carts, and patrol vehicles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of public safety, law enforcement, and fire/life safety techniques; basic knowledge of criminal and civil law; knowledge of community‑oriented problem solving and policing; familiarity with computers, fire alarms, access control, surveillance, key control, emergency management procedures, and vehicle operations. Ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and the public; to exercise judgment under stress; to communicate orally and in writing;

to assist others during emergencies; to complete training and maintain certifications; to work varied hours including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
