About UsThe NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

Description of Work Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody at a minimum custody male correctional facility, this position serves as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) who is responsible for the daily operations of the correctional facility ensuring security is maintained according to NC Department of Adult Correction (DAC) Policy and Procedures and Facility Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Providing direct supervision of the assigned Sergeant I.2. Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
3. Conducting daily inspections of housing units, building and grounds to identify safety hazards and inspecting posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are carried out properly to ensure the operation is running smoothly.
4. Conducting and reviewing investigations regarding security issues incidents, disputes and complaints.
5. Conducting searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband.
6. Responding to emergency situations as needed.
7. Assisting in planning and supervising personnel actions, time reports, staff evaluations, officer work schedules, and training.
8. Assisting in the coordination and planning of activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
9. Preparing a variety of records and reports related to custody operations and other related duties as required.

Knowledge

Skills and Abilities

/Management Preferences Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the

Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred :

Documented experience with report writing.

Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures/or Facility Operations.

About Wake Correctional Center Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimum-security prison for adult males. It is primarily a “work” unit in that 80 percent of the offenders leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area. Offenders also work at other area adult correctional-facilities and Correction Enterprises operations. There are also offenders nearing their release date that participate on the work release program, leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community.

Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service, clothes house, janitorial, landscaping, maintenance, canteen, and recreation areas.
