The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. This full‑time position is located in the Institutional Operations Division and reports to the Maintenance/Construction Supervisor III.
Key Responsibilities- Perform a full range of journey‑level work duties associated with the construction, maintenance, and repair of air‑conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms.
- Identify the cause of problems, determine required materials and tools, plan repair methods, and carry out repairs independently on most jobs.
- Review larger, more complex jobs with the technical supervisor to ensure proper work methods and acceptable quality.
- Train new mechanics or supervise helpers and assist with duties throughout the facility.
- Work independently on moderate to complex repair activities.
- Use electrical test devices, troubleshoot and repair chiller electrical control circuits, and overhaul small, medium and large compressors under technical supervision.
- Check accuracy, calibrate electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems; troubleshoot control circuits and replace faulty thermostats, wiring, and control devices.
- Perform preventive maintenance on air‑conditioning and air‑handling equipment, log operational characteristics of chillers, and install air‑conditioning units.
- Build and install ductwork and chilled water piping; adjust chillers and balance distribution systems for maximum energy efficiency; remove and replace joints or lengths of pipe in chilled water distribution systems.
- Assist in troubleshooting and repairing the fire alarm system.
- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) and at least three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air‑conditioning chillers, air‑handling, chilled water distribution, and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as an EPA Type I, II, III, or Universal technician per Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart
F.
- Working knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of air‑conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Salary Range: $39,244 – $68,679 per year. The position is full‑time (40 hours per week) with state benefits, including health insurance options, retirement plans, supplemental benefits, paid vacation, sick and community service leave, and paid parental leave.
