HVAC Mechanic I (S)

About the Agency

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction operates state prisons and oversees the safety, security, and rehabilitative services for adult offenders. The Division of Institutions manages daily operations of all state‑operated prison facilities across North Carolina.

Description of Work

This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution, Halifax County
. The HVAC Mechanic performs the full range of preventive and routine maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration systems for a medium and minimum custody facility that houses over 800 adult males.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain, service, and repair heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning equipment.
  • Install new HVAC equipment and charge refrigerants.
  • Replace bearings, seals, and filters; lubricate components as needed.
  • Adjust and balance distribution systems.
  • Maintain electronic and pneumatic equipment; perform testing, troubleshooting, alignment, and repair of electrical/pneumatic systems.
  • Identify problems, determine necessary materials and tools, and execute repair procedures independently on most jobs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance functions in accordance with scheduled plans.
  • Train and/or supervise inmate helpers as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of progressive experience in installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling units, chilled water distribution, and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart

    F.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Experience with electronic/pneumatic controls and advanced troubleshooting techniques.
