Youth Counselor (S) – NC08 – Grade NC08 – State of North Carolina. The Department of Public Safety is looking for a passionate individual who will work with court‑involved youth as part of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Division.
Responsibilities- Participate in child and family team meetings and other meetings with community partners to assist youth in transition.
- Work with the contracted behavioral health provider staff from New Hope to ensure coordination of services and care.
- Support implementation of each young person’s trauma‑responsive plan.
- Directly monitor and engage with youth during programming and activities.
- Monitor and supervise juveniles while housed, at school, and during all daily activities.
- Maintain a secure environment, routinely monitor and observe juveniles.
- Complete daily records, including documentation of safety violations, security breaches, activity briefings for shift personnel, crisis intervention events, behavioral problems/issues, and youth progress updates.
- Provide feedback to the treatment team on juveniles and communicate information regarding treatment plans to clients.
- Provide counseling and therapeutic intervention, serving as a member of a therapeutic treatment team.
- Utilize a range of counseling techniques and skills in crisis interventions.
- Implement individual and group treatment plans to effect behavioral changes.
- Administer scoring, interpret a variety of assessment tools to evaluate treatment progress, and review treatment strategies to achieve rehabilitation goals.
- Participate in the development of individual treatment, educational, vocational and community reintegration programs.
- Apply physical and mechanical restraints when necessary.
- Administer medication as required.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Two years of experience working with a juvenile/family client population or related human services experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development.
- Demonstrated experience with counseling skills.
- Demonstrated experience with crisis intervention techniques.
- Demonstrated experience working with minority groups.
- Demonstrated experience working with a multidisciplinary service team.
Full‑time position (40 hours per week). Shift work is required and may include weekends, holidays, and evenings. Shift premium of 10% applies to 2nd or 3rd shift. The Youth Counselor classification qualifies for the Nevada Step Pay Plan with salary steps as follows:
- Step 0: $41,558
- Step 1: $44,468
- Step 2: $47,137
- Step 3: $49,494
- Step 4: $51,473
- Step 5: $53,017
- Step 6: $54,078
