The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking applicants for the School Resource Officer position in the School Resources Division. A School Resource Officer acts as a liaison between school administrators, faculty, and students with social agencies and programs available within the community. An officer serving in the role of a SRO is expected to build and maintain relationships with students, school personnel, parents, co‑workers and their immediate supervisors.

In this role, a School Resource Officer must provide a high level of visibility and maintain a proactive approach to deterring criminal behavior on school property. This position also requires good judgment and excellent communication skills.

Work Schedule

This is an FLSA non‑exempt position. Work is generally completed on a regularly scheduled basis; the normal workweek is based on a schedule of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, forty (40) hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Assembles required documents and information as needed for the School Resource Division.
  • Obtains and maintains certifications applicable for the position.
  • Reports to duty on time and has regular attendance.
  • Maintains the confidence and trust of students, peers, school staff, superiors and the general public.
  • Carries out any or all other duties as directed by the Sheriff or his designee.
  • Attends training that is relevant to the School Resource Officer position (local and out of state).
  • Uses discretion effectively to determine a proper course of action consistent with the Alamance Burlington School System policies and the department’s mission and values.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Must be out of the 12‑month law enforcement probationary period.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the following: oral interview, background check, polygraph examination and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years’ experience with duties closely related to the School Resource Officer position, already certified as an SRO or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Associate or Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field.
Computer Skills

Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).

Special Criteria

Candidate must successfully complete 40 hours of SRO training.

Physical Demands

This position requires standing, walking, sitting, manual manipulation, reaching, climbing, bending and other physical activities. The job may require lifting or carrying weights up to 100 pounds and performing tasks that involve pushing or pulling. The frequency of these activities ranges from occasional to frequent throughout the workday.

Physical Requirements

Vision (near, distance, peripheral, color vision, depth perception). While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to operate general office equipment.

Work Environment

Position will be located within the School Resource Division at the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office in Graham, NC. The role requires work within a North Carolina public school and daily interaction with supervisors, the general public, school personnel and all members of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.
