Position Summary

Responsible for collecting and transporting solid waste and recyclable materials from collection sites to the transfer station or recycle center.

Responsibilities
  • Collect waste and recyclables from convenience centers, schools, and local government offices throughout McDowell County.
  • Operate commercially licensed vehicles, including a 40‑cubic‑yard compactor truck, a roll‑off container truck, and occasionally a wheel loader with front‑end loader (Class B vehicles with tandem axles and air brakes).
  • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles (lubrication, cleaning, tire‑pressure checks, fluid level checks, etc.) and keep a daily log of the route.
  • Inspect trucks and equipment prior to operation to ensure readiness.
  • Work under the supervision of the Public Services Manager.
  • Work under challenging environmental conditions (dust, pollen, odors, extreme weather, noise, vibrations, gaseous or infectious waste).
Qualifications
  • Valid NC Commercial Driver License (Class B) required.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment (truck, compactor, loader).
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and background check required.
  • Ability to safely and proficiently operate the specified vehicles.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to perform under varied environmental conditions.
