College Bound Opportunities (CBO) is a college access nonprofit dedicated to guiding first‑generation and underrepresented students through every step of the college‑going journey.
We work closely with students and families to make higher education attainable, affordable, and the right fit.
Position OverviewThe College Counselor plays a hands‑on role in supporting Scholars through the college application and financial aid process. From building college lists to submitting the FAFSA, this person is a trusted guide for students and families navigating one of the most important decisions of their lives. The ideal candidate is organized, student‑centered, and passionate about closing the opportunity gap in higher education.
Key Responsibilities College Planning & Applications- Serves as the primary advisor for all aspects of the college process
- Supports students in researching and building balanced, best‑fit college lists
- Reviews and provides feedback on college essays and personal statements
- Assists with requesting letters of recommendation and coordinating transcript submissions
- Monitors Final date to receive applicationss and ensures students submit complete, on‑time applications
- Maintains relationships with college representatives from partner colleges
- Coordinates college visits to local college campuses
- Plans and facilitates FAFSA and CSS Profile workshops for students and families
- Provides one‑on‑one support to families navigating financial aid forms and resolving issues
- Helps students research and apply for scholarships
- Supports families in comparing financial aid award letters and understanding true cost of education
- Maintains accurate records of student progress, application activity, and scholarship awards
- Contributes to program resources including toolkits, checklists, and family‑facing guides
- Collaborates with the program team to continuously improve the college counseling experience
- Participates in regular supervision, team meetings and performance reviews
- Experience in college counseling, advising, or a related field (nonprofit, school, or higher education setting)
- Strong knowledge of the college application process, financial aid, and scholarship landscape
- Excellent written communication skills and experience editing college essays
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple students and deadlines simultaneously
- Comfortable working with students and families from diverse backgrounds
- Open to learning more about college options for first generation students
- Familiarity with Common App, FAFSA, and CSS Profile required
- Willingness to work in school‑based settings and attend occasional evening or weekend programs
- Commitment to educational equity and CBO’s mission
- Hourly or part‑time compensation
- Hybrid work environment with meaningful community engagement
