The Patient Care Technician works under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and, according to established procedures, performs patient care tasks and procedures necessary to provide for the care, comfort and safety of patients. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit.

- Patient & Visitor Interactions / Customer Service / Hourly Rounding: answer call lights, phones, assist visitors; perform purposeful hourly rounding on all assigned patients.
- Safe Handling / Ambulation / Repositioning: learn patient safe handling skills; assist in ambulation, transferring, lifting and repositioning patients using safe patient handling equipment.
- Basic Nursing Care – ADLs: assist patients with personal care needs – bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, bedpan or urinal use, positioning, answering call lights, bed making; under RN/LPN supervision; follow policies for safety.
- Admission, Discharge and Transfers: assist with room set‑up, welcoming new patients/room orientation, discharging and/or transferring patients; provide patient/family orientation to room and hospital per practice.
- Procedures and Treatments: accurately complete and document tasks such as ADLs, vital signs, weights, intake & output, calorie counts; perform and explain procedures (e.g., urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care/dressing changes) under nurse direction; notify personnel of responses/questions; collect non‑sterile specimens; perform point‑of‑care blood sugar testing; promote and maintain skin integrity by reporting problems.
- Care Companion/Sitter/Observer: remain with a patient as directed by RN or LPN to keep the patient safe.

Specific Tasks:
support nursing team with indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment, answering and relaying calls, filing and maintaining records, retrieving supplies, specimens, instruments and test results.

- Complete an accredited certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course (preferred).
- Complete at least one nursing clinical rotation in medical or surgical nursing (preferred).
- Current BLS certification for the healthcare provider issued by the American Heart Association (or obtain within 90 days of hire).
No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Excellent interpersonal skills including teamwork, ability to prioritize, ability to follow directions.
- Demonstrates concern for and commitment to patient and family welfare.
- Attend in‑depth orientation regarding patient care skill tasks.
- Observe all fire and safety procedures and patient experience standards.
Normal mental, visual, auditory attention required; manual dexterity needed for sustained periods; adequate visual acuity to assess patients and read/record charts; adequate auditory acuity for communication; potential exposure to blood, body fluids, chemicals, hazardous materials; required to work under pressure; must utilize patient movement equipment; may lift up to 50 pounds in urgent events; wear PPE as required.
Physical DemandsEquipment use for patient lifting and transfers; sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, push, pull, lift during shift.
Technical SkillsBasic computer skills required.
