George Washington Carver Academy is hiring a Special Education Coordinator to join the team. Must have Michigan Teacher Certification and endorsement.

Job Summary

The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and supporting the implementation of special education programs and services to ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate educational support in accordance with state and federal requirements. This position provides guidance to special education staff, supports compliance with IEP processes, and collaborates with school leadership, families, and service providers to promote positive student outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education programs and services across the school.

  • Support special education teachers and staff with IEP development, implementation, and compliance.

  • Monitor IEP timelines, evaluations, reevaluations, and required documentation.

  • Ensure special education practices comply with IDEA, Michigan Department of Education requirements, and school policies.

  • Provide guidance and support to staff regarding special education procedures, accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies.

  • Participate in IEP meetings and provide support to staff, students, and families.

  • Collaborate with school leadership, general education teachers, related service providers, and families to address student needs.

  • Monitor student progress and assist with identifying appropriate interventions and supports.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records and special education documentation.

  • Assist with staff training and professional development related to special education.

  • Support the development and implementation of effective systems for special education programming and compliance.

  • Communicate effectively with families and respond to questions or concerns regarding special education services.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by school leadership.

Cognitive Demands
  • Ability to analyze student data, IEPs, evaluations, and other educational records.

  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.

  • Ability to interpret and apply special education regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and compliance requirements.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school building for extended periods.

  • Ability to attend meetings and work at a computer for extended periods.

  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • Ability to respond appropriately to student and staff needs within a school environment.

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field required;
    Master's degree preferred.

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate Special Education endorsement required.

  • Previous experience working in special education, preferably in a school-based setting.

  • Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, special education compliance, and Michigan special education requirements.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, families, and service providers.

  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and meet required timelines.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and school-based student information/IEP systems preferred.
