Under general supervision of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector examines industrial, wildland, wildland-urban interface, commercial, institutional, educational, residential properties and places of public assemblage to determine compliance with appropriate fire prevention codes, regulations and standards; examines plans for fire code compliance; enforces Tribal codes and ordinances related to life safety, housing, health and sanitation, public nuisance and weed abatement;

conducts training sessions in fire prevention for employees, officials and the public; implements and conducts fire prevention training for suppression personnel and others as directed; acts as a technical resource person to staff and the public; supervises and trains fire prevention personnel; and performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Service and Public Engagement
  • Deliver prompt, courteous service to Tribal members, team members, and the public.
  • Conduct public presentations and fire safety education for various community groups.
  • Perform safety briefings for employees, contractors, and citizens.
Code Enforcement and Compliance
  • Enforce fire and life safety codes; issue violations abatement orders, and stop-work notices.
  • Ensure compliance with Tribal ordinances and applicable laws; reexamine occupancies for progress.
  • Coordinate with Tribal departments and appear in court as needed.
  • Review site and building plans for regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor progress toward code adherence and reexamine occupancies.
Inspections and Hazard Mitigation
  • Conduct fire and life safety surveys across various property types.
  • Perform field inspections of buildings and facilities to assess fire detection/suppression systems and code compliance.
  • Advise on fire escape planning and built-in protection systems.
  • Respond to complaints and investigate safety concerns.
  • Conduct wildland inspections and advise on urban interface fire prevention strategies.
  • Promote safety in wildland-urban interface zones.
Emergency Response and Event Safety
  • Serve as Fire Safety Officer at events; monitor for irregularities and plan escape routes.
  • Respond to fires and emergencies as directed.
Reporting, Documentation and Coordination
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and studies on fire and life safety.
  • Communicate with city, county, and state fire officials; coordinate with other departments and agencies.
  • Lead field operations and occupancy surveys for fire prevention.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Completion of 20 semester units of college-level courses in Fire Science, Emergency Management or a closely related field preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of journey-level experience within the last four (4) years performing fire and life safety inspections of industrial, commercial, institutional, hospital, educational, residential and public assembly facilities; OR one (1) year experience at or equivalent to the level of Fire Prevention Officer in a City, State, Federal, Tribal or local government required.

Knowledge of:
  • Conduct fire safety inspections, surveys and public education initiatives.
  • Enforce fire prevention codes and ordinances (municipal, state, federal and Tribal).
  • Review building plans and construction compliance with CBC, CFC, NFPA and other standards.
  • Asses water supply systems for fire protection adequacy.
  • Monitor and advise on hazardous materials storage and handling.
  • Maintain fire alarm systems and oversee fire drill procedures.
  • Utilize modern office systems and software for documentation and reporting.
  • Support community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) development, including the San Manuel CWPP.
  • Deliver public presentations and engage in community outreach.
Ability to:
  • Conduct inspections and identify fire/life safety hazards.
  • Analyze facilities and recommend effective fire and life safety measures.
  • Determine life safety deficiencies and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Research and apply laws, ordinances and regulations to situations of potential fire and life hazards.
