Responsibilities
  • Support the Commercial space mission area with long‑term planning, technology insertion plans, and architecture decisions
  • Lead the development of novel technical solutions to meet our customers and partners’ needs
  • Coordinate with IRAD teams on and provide technical oversight of key technology development plans
  • Ensure assessment and conversion of mission needs/requirements into total mission systems solutions that account for design and technology maturity constraints of the system
  • Continuously translate architecture analysis into action plans and product development roadmaps
  • Work with Enterprise Performance & Improvement, Supply Chain, and LOB leadership to translate mission and product roadmaps into technology investment and industry partnership decisions
  • Drive productization and commercialization approaches for key technology areas
  • Support internal and external system design reviews
  • Interface directly with customers and teammates, both domestic and foreign, to ensure compatibility of architectural roadmaps and technological solutions
  • Leverage products and architectures across LM’s portfolios to develop novel solutions applicable to new, emerging markets
  • Oversee the execution of current programs of record, ensuring program level decisions do not compromise enterprise plans and future business activities
  • Develop multi‑domain solutions and work seamlessly to support both Line of Business and Business Development efforts
  • Seek and maintain knowledge of current and developing technologies, design, and analysis methodologies
  • Develop models and architectural guidelines for current and future mission system development
  • Build successful teams with internal stakeholders, (Business Development and central Engineering), as well as with external stakeholders (suppliers, mission partners, etc.)
  • In tandem with the commercial mission area director, represent the commercial mission area to LM line of business and engineering leadership
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years experience performing in a Systems Architect role either in a space systems business development capacity or on a space development program
  • Large space development program proposal experience
  • 5 years experience in the design or analysis of a fundamental spacecraft subsystem (Avionics, Propulsion, GN&C, Mechanisms, etc)
  • 10 years experience working on spacecraft programs
  • Familiarity with mission design tools and a demonstrated ability to balance mission requirements with spacecraft options to achieve affordable overall solutions
  • Familiarity with MBSE concepts
  • Ability and willingness to obtain LM Systems Architect certification within 12 months of starting in this role
Desired Skills
  • Experience with space‑based communications and/or RF sensing systems
  • Experience applying MBSE concepts in a Systems Engineer or Systems Architect role
  • Familiarity with LM bus and major component product lines
  • Prior experience as a chief engineer of a small to medium sized program
  • Command and Data Handling (C&DH) experience, particularly with space processor developments
  • Flight and Ground software experience
  • Ability to apply technologies to disparate mission areas to create novel mission solutions
