Role descriptionThe Tax Manager will manage U.S. state and local direct tax affairs related to the Arcadis North America domestic business, as well as support tax matters related to Arcadis U.S. foreign operations. The role is focused on U.S. state and local tax compliance and planning, responding to tax inquiries from tax authorities, and supporting federal, international, and tax provision matters as needed.
This role will serve as a process owner and reviewer for state and local tax compliance, including returns, estimates, extensions, apportionment, payments, refunds, notices, audits, and related supporting work papers. The Tax Manager may also have the opportunity to support quarterly income tax reporting for Arcadis North America and its subsidiaries under IAS 12 / IFRS on an as-needed basis, including exposure to uncertain tax positions, deferred tax positions, return-to-provision adjustments, cash taxes, and forecasting.
The Tax Manager will work closely with Tax leadership, U.S. and global Finance, Accounting, Legal, Treasury, external advisors, auditors, and business stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate compliance and reporting, while driving process improvements, standardized work papers, improved controls, and automation opportunities.
Role accountabilities- Lead and manage the state and local tax compliance calendar, including due dates, estimates, extensions, return filings, and related compliance trackers.
- Review state and local income tax returns and supporting work papers, including estimates, extensions, state apportionment calculations, and related compliance documentation.
- Manage monthly state tax payable and receivable reconciliations and oversee state tax payment and refund accounting procedures, including online tax portal access and controls.
- Manage and coordinate responses to tax inquiries, notices, controversies, and audits from state and local tax authorities, including tracking status, documentation, and follow-up actions.
- Partner with outside tax consultants on state and local tax compliance, planning, audit defense, provision support, and process improvement projects.
- Collaborate with Accounting, Legal, Treasury, Finance, global Tax, and other corporate departments to obtain required data, resolve issues, and complete assigned tax objectives.
- Monitor state legislative and administrative tax developments, maintain up-to-date records of changes, and advise on potential tax planning opportunities and risk considerations.
- Research state and local tax matters and provide technical support to U.S. and global tax team members, Finance, and business stakeholders as needed.
- Support the Tax and Compliance Director with the preparation and review of U.S. tax compliance and quarterly income tax provisions under IAS 12 / IFRS, including uncertain tax positions, deferred tax positions, and return-to-provision adjustments.
- Provide tax reporting and tax accounting information to Accounting and Finance, including support for cash taxes, forecasting, deferred tax analysis, uncertain tax positions, and provision-related schedules.
- Drive efficiency through AI, automation, standardized work papers, improved use of tax technology, and reduced reliance on manual process workflows.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and review support to tax staff or senior tax personnel assisting with state and local compliance, notices, payments, work papers, and reporting deliverables.
- 7-10+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant experience in U.S. federal and state income tax compliance, state and local tax reporting, audits, and planning.
