2nd Shift Production Helper

This role supports a high-volume industrial metal production facility by assembling, packaging, and preparing materials for shipment according to detailed work orders and specifications. As a 2nd Shift Production Helper, you help maintain a safe and productive work area, support multiple positions on the production floor as needed, and ensure orders are completed accurately and efficiently to meet customer expectations.

Responsibilities
  • Assemble material for shipment or for use as components in accordance with specifications and instructions on work orders.
  • Select material from specific heats or based on physical condition as directed on work orders and job instructions.
  • Count materials accurately and record heat or test numbers, symbols, random lengths, and other required information on orders.
  • Prepare and package materials using appropriate banding and packaging tools to meet work order packaging specifications.
  • Use measurement tools such as tape measures and gauges to verify lengths, sizes, and other material specifications.
  • Maintain safety, quality, and productivity standards for each job assignment and follow all facility safety procedures.
  • Handle materials safely and efficiently, including staging and moving product, with forklift and overhead crane equipment if qualified.
  • Fill in for absent positions on the production floor, as qualified and excluding maintenance roles, to help maintain workflow.
  • Troubleshoot minor issues and adapt to changing production needs in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
  • Support shipping, receiving, and order fulfillment activities by picking, staging, and preparing orders for outbound shipment.
  • Record lot numbers, heat numbers, and other material tracking information accurately to support inventory and documentation requirements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned, understanding that responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to successfully pass a skills-based assessment evaluating reading, math, inspection and measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and inspection accuracy when counting materials, recording heat and test numbers, and verifying order specifications.
  • Proficiency in assembly and packaging tasks, including preparing materials for shipment in accordance with work instructions and customer specifications.
  • Ability to understand and follow work orders and specifications to correctly select materials based on heat numbers, physical condition, and packaging requirements.
  • Proficient use of hand tools, including banding and packaging tools, for securing, bundling, and preparing materials safely and efficiently.
  • Comfort using measurement tools such as tape measures and gauges to verify lengths, sizes, and other material specifications.
  • Basic math skills for counting, measuring, and accurately recording material data.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and adaptability to fill in across different roles and maintain workflow in a dynamic production environment.
  • Certified fork truck experience preferred, with the ability to safely move materials and stage orders in a production or warehouse environment.
  • Crane experience preferred, including use of sheet lifters, chains, slings, hoists, or hooks to handle metal materials.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with hand tools for banding and packaging material in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.
  • Understanding of work order packaging specifications and ability to apply them consistently.
  • Material handling experience using forklifts and overhead cranes to move, stage, and load materials while maintaining safety and productivity.
  • Shipping and receiving or order fulfillment experience, including picking, staging, and preparing orders for outbound shipment.
  • Inventory tracking and documentation experience, such as recording lot numbers, heat numbers, and tracking materials through production.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with metal products, including basic understanding of fabrication or processing concepts.
  • Experience in the metals or steel industry preferred, such as prior work in steel service centers, fabrication shops, or similar environments.
