Commercial Carpenter
This role constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, wallboard, and related materials for commercial projects. You use a variety of hand and power tools, follow detailed blueprints and specifications, and ensure all work conforms to local building codes while delivering high-quality carpentry, millwork, and finish work.
Responsibilities- Study blueprints, sketches, and building plans to determine required materials, construction methods, and carpentry procedures.
- Review specifications to plan construction activities, including sequencing work based on start and completion times and staffing needs for carpentry tasks.
- Prepare layouts using tools such as rules, framing squares, and calipers to ensure precise measurements and alignment.
- Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials according to prescribed measurements, and cut, shape, and plane materials using saws, chisels, and planes.
- Assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten them using nails, dowel pins, glue, and appropriate hardware to create structurally sound assemblies.
- Verify the trueness and alignment of structures using levels, plumb bobs, and other measuring tools to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
- Erect frameworks for structures, including walls and supports, and lay sub-flooring for commercial buildings.
- Build stairs and lay out, construct, and install partitions and cabinetwork in accordance with project plans.
- Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls to meet functional and aesthetic requirements.
- Take responsibility for the production quality of millwork, trim, metal studs, drywall, and acoustic ceilings, ensuring all finishes meet project specifications.
- Fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware such as locks.
- Erect scaffolding and ladders safely for assembling and installing structures above ground level.
- Fit and nail sheathing to outer walls and roofs of buildings to provide structural support and weather protection.
- Install door and window bucks in designated positions within the building framework and brace them securely with boards nailed to the framework.
- Manage small special projects from setup through completion, ensuring work is completed efficiently and to quality standards.
- Work both indoors and outdoors on commercial construction sites, adapting to varying conditions while maintaining safety and productivity.
- At least 2 years of carpentry experience in commercial or related construction environments is preferred.
- Strong carpentry skills, including framing, trim carpentry, finish carpentry, and commercial door installation.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and building plans accurately.
- Proficiency using construction hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions on the job site.
- Ability to solve mathematical problems quickly and accurately, including measurements and calculations related to layout and cutting.
- Capability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more as required by the job.
- Ability to use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate materials, tools, and equipment throughout the workday.
- Ability to work safely with sharp tools and power equipment in a construction environment.
- Capacity to stand or walk for long periods while performing carpentry tasks.
- Ability to read and use measuring tools and levels to verify accuracy and alignment.
- Comfort working both inside and outside in varying site conditions.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in commercial construction environments, including working on projects in multiple locations.
- Skill in installing paneling, metal studs, drywall, and acoustic ceilings.
- Experience erecting scaffolding and ladders and working at heights in a safe and controlled manner.
- Background in installing prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality millwork and finishes.
- Ability to manage small special projects independently, including planning tasks and coordinating work.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing job site requirements.
