Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing

In alignment with the NWRESD's mission statement, this position provides academic and communication intervention for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and serves as the primary instructor of DHH students placed in classrooms designed to specifically serve those children. The teacher of DHH develops IEPs/IFSPs to meet individual student needs, and assists general education teachers in developing plans and programs to enhance transitions into general classroom settings.

Itinerant teachers of DHH children provide direct and/or consultative services to assist students in the receptive and expressive processes or oral, written, and/or signed language to children in component school districts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Bachelor's degree required;
  Master's degree preferred
• Current Oregon teaching license through TSPC with Deaf/HH endorsement or ability to obtain license within timeline specified by district.
• Advanced-level proficiency in American Sign Language required
• Prior experience in general education preferred

Essential Functions:

• Assess children for language, social, and cognitive development.
• Establish and reinforce developmentally appropriate curriculum to promote learning in all areas of development impacted by hearing loss.
• Participate as a team member on eligibility, IFSP/IEP, and 3-year reevaluation teams. Case management (for classroom teachers) includes review of the child's eligibility, preparing team reports, development and preparation of IFSP/IEP goals and related documents, and maintenance of progress.
• Develop short-term objectives and long-term goals that meet the students' individual needs in the areas of communication and academics.
• Provide instruction in language development and academic subject areas. Advanced-level sign language competence is required for Deaf classroom teachers.
• Work with general education teachers and other school personnel to develop and implement instructional programs.
• Provide requisite data to the district and supervisor within designated deadlines.
• Provide orientations about deafness/hearing loss and its implications to district staff members, as requested.
• Write lesson plans that can be clearly understood and used by the teacher and/or substitute.
• Monitor daily operational function of student amplification and instruct students to be responsible for use and care of their aid, implant, and/or HATS system.
• Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
• Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with staff and customers at all organizational levels.
• Attend scheduled staff meetings.
• Perform other job duties as assigned
