About the Opportunity

This recruitment is underway to create a pool of candidates eligible for future Sheriff's Office Enforcement and/or Jail Lieutenant vacancies within the next 12 months.

The Washington County's Sheriff's Office is currently looking for skilled law enforcement professionals that can effectively lead a variety of Sheriff's Office (SO) operations and unit/division activities. Ideal candidates will have proven administrative skills that can also manage complex projects to successful completion, navigate interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups that have competing interests, and manage personnel issues effectively. Responsibilities

As a Lieutenant, you will lead, plan, organize, and manage a variety of law enforcement operations and unit/division activities within the Washington County Sheriff's Office. These activities include investigations, patrol, jail operations and administration, criminal records, internal services, and general administrative leadership roles. Incumbents perform a variety of technical tasks relative to their assigned area of responsibility.

Duties may include:

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in investigation, patrol, jail, services, or other administrative leadership posts.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for assigned posts or work units/divisions; implement policies and procedures that support the Sheriff's Office goals, values, and operational activities.
  • Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports on operations and activities.
  • Supervise major crime scenes; participate in criminal investigations and prepare cases for court and the District Attorney's office; provide credible testimony in court settings.
  • Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment; enforce a safe workplace; establish a culture of teamwork and communication; create a workplace that promotes the organizational values; actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.
  • Conduct special departmental investigations for traffic accidents involving department personnel; respond to complaints filed against officers; conduct internal affairs investigations; make recommendations to mitigate problems to appropriate agencies or departments.
  • Act as departmental liaison to various law enforcement agencies and multi‑agency councils; cooperate with them in the apprehension of criminals.
  • Direct, coordinate, or supervise special departmental projects or programs including search and rescue operations, tactical negotiations team, emergency management, special narcotic programs, and deaf communicator programs.
  • Participate in intergovernmental and multi‑jurisdictional meetings and conferences.
  • Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for requests; monitor and control expenditures within assigned program areas.
  • Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; participate in and implement discipline processes and outcomes.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective actions necessary to resolve complaints.
