Position: Department Communications Coordinator I

About The Opportunity

Washington County’s Sheriff’s Office has an exciting opportunity to add an expert Communications Coordinator I to the Public Affairs Team. The supervisor for the Public Affairs team oversees and manages the daily operations of various staff members, including Community Outreach, a multimedia specialist, a graphic designer, and a digital specialist. This position is crucial for ensuring that the team's objectives are met and that communication strategies are effectively implemented.

The supervisor will report directly to the Public Affairs and Communications Manager, ensuring alignment with the Office's broader goals and initiatives.

We are seeking a candidate for a supervisory role who excels at organization and can manage multiple projects simultaneously. This individual may have to represent the Sheriff’s Office at community events, requiring a personable and professional demeanor. The ideal candidate will thrive in diverse environments and engage effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.

Skills and Abilities
  • Techniques of preparing, producing, and disseminating information to the public, news media, schools, and the community using major media communication including photography, graphic arts, copy layout, and radio and television programming;
  • Principles, techniques, and practices of journalism, expository prose, and editing;
  • Preparation, composition, layout, production, and dissemination of educational, informational, and promotional materials;
  • Principles, practices, and emerging trends of public relations and public communication;
Skills To
  • Design and implement effective public information programs using a variety of methods, techniques, and media;
  • Resolve conflicts through facilitation of group activities and discussions;
Ability To
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, community groups, and representatives of business, other governmental, and community agencies;
  • Supervise and manage subordinate professional, technical, and administrative support staff.
About Washington County’s Sheriff’s Office

The Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is a full-service law enforcement agency located in Hillsboro, Oregon, serving the residents of the county's urban and rural areas. WCSO enhances public safety by fostering professionalism, compassion, and trust within its team and the communities it serves. WCSO is the primary first responder for unincorporated residents, offering services from routine patrol and crime investigation to specialized teams.

The WCSO also operates the county’s only jail and provides services to cities within the county on a contract basis.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, public relations, or related field; AND
  • One (1) year of professional experience in public relations, community outreach, communications, public information programs, or related work within a complex organization.
Additional Licenses, Certifications, Physical Abilities And Specialty Requirements
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Driver's license valid in the state of Oregon and an acceptable driving record is required.
